Propecia or Finasteride is an orally administered medication to rectify male pattern hair loss. It is the only medication to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It has been proved to be long-term effective, after undergoing years of investigation. Propecia can be used by men of all ages for treating male pattern baldness.
Propecia is taken once a day. It is available by prescription only. Children and women should not use Propecia.
How does Propecia for hair loss work?
Propecia inhibits the formation of Dihydrotestosterone in the scalp thereby, reducing DHT significantly. DHT is said to be a key factor in hair loss.
Effectiveness of Propecia for hair loss:
Researchers carried out clinical studies for 5 years and came to the following findings:
- Propecia helped in the regrowth of hair in 2 out of 3 men.
- 9 out of 10 men showed either hair regrowth or no further hair loss after taking Propecia.
- Majority of men taking Propecia reported reduced hair loss and bald spots.
Results of Propecia for hair loss:
Propecia has to be taken for as long as one wants to grow and maintain hair. Research shows that 99 percent men reported hair growth or no further hair loss after using Propecia for 2 years. Difference can be seen within 3 months of starting Propecia for hair loss. However, it may vary from person to person. If one has to see long term results, one has to continue using Propecia for a long time. One is likely to lose hair again once the medicine is stopped.
Side-effects of Propecia for hair loss:
Although FDA approved, some side effects have been reported after using Propecia.
- Decreased libido
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Ejaculation disorder
- Infertility
- Enlarged breasts./Tenderness in the breast/ Discharge from the nipples
- Prostate Cancer
- Allergic reaction(tightness of the chest, rash, difficulty in breathing etc)
- Testicular pain
These side effects are reversible and usually disappear once the medication is discontinued.
