Is Minoxidil Useful for Hair Loss Treatment?

Minoxidil is the generic name. It is available in the market by the name Rogaine. Minoxidil is a drug useful in treating hair loss. It was first manufactured in the form of an oral tablet for treating blood pressure. While using minoxidil tablet, it was noticed that the patient using this tablet observed thick hair growth. Later, it was developed in the form of an external solution for treating male pattern baldness.


  • Minoxidil is available in 2% and 5% solutions.
  • Minoxidil consists of chemicals which can be harmful to children so it is stored in a tight bottle at room temperature. It should not be exposed to sunlight.
  • Minoxidil must be applied in 1ml solution twice a day. As it activates blood vessels, it is important that is applied evenly and spread all over the scalp.
  • Treatment is effective when the solution is used at least for 6 months.


  • Apply on dry scalp for better results.
  • Massage after application for effective treatment.
  • It should be applied in exact quantities as prescribed for its maximum absorption.

Side Effects:

  • If irritation to the skin is observed, consult a doctor and stop using minoxidil.
  • Minoxidil contains alcohol so it can cause irritation to the eyes.
  • It can damage skin when used excessively after observing irritation.

How does Minoxidil Work:

  • The exact mechanism of minoxidil is unknown. Minoxidil encourages hair loss stabilization thus, promoting hair growth. Minoxidil dilates blood vessels which is useful in increasing nutrient supply to hair follicles. This is still not a proven theory.
  • Another theory says that minoxidil increases DNA synthesis in hair cells. It is a stable drug which is absorbed by the scalp into the skin. Minoxidil is converted to active minoxidil sulphate which increases hair growth.
