Hair Loss Due to Fungal Hair Infection

Ringworm and piedra are the fungal hair infections which are commonly seen. Children are vulnerable to these infections. The fungus of the hair spreads through infected persons, pets or contaminated objects. Bedding, brushes, hats, clothing can carry fungus and spread the infection to others. Showers and swimming pool surfaces are also common places where fungal hair infection can spread.

A fungal infection can cause temporary hair loss accompanied with bald patches. The scalp can become red, itchy and there can be blistering. Due to the fungal infection the hair becomes weak and breaks off resulting in hair loss.

Fungal Hair Infection Types:

  • Ringworm: Ringworm affects the scalp and initially, it appears like a small pimple. Gradually, the affected area begins to grow. The hair breaks off and bald patches can be seen. The scalp becomes itchy, red and there can be blistering. Anti-fungal medications such as Griseofulvin, fluconazole are used to treat this condition.
  • Piedra: This fungal infection is characterized by nodules on the hair. The infection may spread to the body and the genital area. As the infection progresses, hard nodules appear on the hair. The hair weakens and breaks off, resulting in patchy hair loss. Medications such as ketoconazole are used to treat this infection.

If you have patchy hair loss, redness and itching of the scalp, do consult your doctor. Your doctor may take a hair sample and send it for fungal culture. If a fungal infection is found, anti-fungal medications such as fluconazole or ketoconazole can be used to treat the infection.

  1. I have two patches of baldness on scalp that developed quite rapidly. But their is no redness, itching or blisters. Instead, the skin is very smooth & seems normal. Is this a cause of fungal infection?? What you suggest for curing it??
